Nello Cristianini obtained a Degree in Physics from the University of Trieste (Italy) in 1996 and an MSc in Computational Intelligence from Royal Holloway, University of London in 1997. He obtained a Ph.D. in Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol in 2000, then returned to Royal Holloway for post-Doctoral work in Computer Science. In 2001 he was appointed a Visiting Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley and a Senior Scientist with BIOwulf Technologies. In 2002 he took up the post of Director of Statistics and Information Services, Concurrent Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, MA, and from there to Assistant then Associate Professor in the Statistics Department at the University of California, Davis. In March 2006 he took up the post of Professor in the Department of Engineering Mathematics at Bristol. He has interests in all statistical and computational aspects of machine learning and pattern analysis, and in their application to problems arising in computational biology and bioinformatics. Since 2001, Nello has been Action Editor of the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR), and since 2005 also Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR). He is co-author of the books An Introduction to Support Vector Machines and Kernel Methods for Pattern Analysis with John Shawe-Taylor (both published by Cambridge University Press).
